Movies to keep you occupied

This selection of movies will keep you entertained throughout the lockdown period if you haven’t been working in the office or at home. If you have then your weekend is sorted!

Beauty Shop

So, first on the list is ‘The Beauty shop’, starring Queen Latifah playing the character of Gina the hair dresser whom we first met within the ‘Barbershop franchise.

Synopsis: Gina, who is a very determined hairstylist. moves to Atlanta to open her open Beauty Shop. Gina will face many obstacles while on her journey to opening the most popular hair& beauty shop in Atlanta. I have chosen this movie because I know us women/men are currently missing our hairdressers and beauticians, as well as the good juicy shop gossip that we would usually get while getting our hair laid and slayed. Enjoy this throwback.

Bringing down the house

Next on my list we have another comedy from the amazing Queen Latifah. This movie is ‘Bringing down the house’, also staring the hilarious ‘Steve Martin’.

Synopsis: A man and woman meet on the internet and begin to have an online romance until the lady in question escapes from prison to meet him and wreaks havoc within his life. This movie is hilarious. It’s a funny outlook on catfishing that leads to a friendship and we have all been there at some point. Do enjoy and get your life and adventure.

Eve’s Bayou

On the list we have ‘Eve’s bayou’.

Synopsis: Over the course of a long, hot Louisiana summer, a 10-year-old black girl, Eve Batiste (Jurnee Smollett), discovers that her family’s affluent existence is merely a facade. If you haven’t seen this movie be prepared to see how the mystery and family unravel. The acting is amazing and had me in the edge of my seat playing detective. Definitely give this movie a watch.

Phat Girlz

Finally on my list I have ‘Phat Girlz’ Starring ‘Monique’ released in 2006.

Synopsis: An edgy comedy about two frustrated plus-size women obsessed with their weight while struggling to find love and acceptance in a world full of “hot bodied” babes. This movie is one of my favourites from Monique because she is promoting body positivity as well as showing the frustrations of being a plus size queen in the early 2000s. Get watching.

All these throwbacks are totally worth watching if you haven’t already seen them then you will either be reliving the memories or watching for the first time and getting you ever lasting. Happy watching and stay positive!
